Maternal and Infant Mortality
Indiana is one of the worst states in the nation for both maternal and infant mortality. The Hoosier State is in the top 10 in infant mortality, with 7.3 babies dying per 1,000 live births. We also rank third in maternal mortality, at 41.4 deaths per 100,000 live births. For Black mothers, the rate is a staggering 53.4 deaths per 100,000 live births. For mothers in the 35-44 age range, the death rate is 96.6 per 100,000. That means Indiana loses far more new mothers than the national rate of 51.5 per 100,000.
This issue is an acutely rural problem because hospitals have disappeared from rural counties. In the 4 th Congressional District, 10 of the 16 counties are classified as "maternity deserts," making up nearly 1/3 of the maternity deserts in the entire state. It is clear to me that there needs to be more funding for these rural counties to address this issue and more resources available to women in these parts of the district. There has been a lot of talk in Indianapolis but no action, leading to more preventable deaths. I am ready to act.
